Out of concerns and problems, there are two major issues that require attention:
1. Rejection of organ
- Because the immune system cannot tell the difference between the transplanted liver and harmful viruses and bacteria, it tries to attack the new liver.
- In the first year after a liver transplant, more than 30% of patients have some degree of organ rejection.
- In order to avoid organ rejection when the immune system assaults the transplanted organ, doctors use anti-rejection medications called immunosuppressants.
2. Infection
- Patients who have had liver transplants eventually become more susceptible to illnesses because anti-rejection medications impair the immune system.
- Sometimes, these ailments resolve on their own.
- Some people suffer no sickness at all, while in other cases, infections are effectively treated as soon as they are identified.
